In the rigors of the records and registration workday few of us have time to meditate on our challenges and inefficiencies, nor our successes and best practices. This session will allow our "Zen natures" to flourish as we enlighten ourselves on the purpose of a higher education Registrar’s Office and how to consider improvements to our student services. Our primary focus will be on the balance between process efficiency and service effectiveness.

The intent was to explore the vast potential of the Registrar's Office to participate in, and even lead, components of SEM. This year, it's time to report on our experiences. As such, this session is designed to highlight what we've actually accomplished over the last year in regards to SEM practices.

Professional Development Track Sessions
PDS1Title: Recognizing and Defusing Risk in the Campus Setting
Presenter: William A. Erb, Sr. Director of Student Health Services at Utah Valley University
Description: Many of us have read the headlines and seen the news reports about students acting out aggression in a campus setting. We can recall the names of the schools all too quickly. The main question I am asked by staff, faculty, and administrators in our post Columbine and Virginia Tech world is "how can I identify a potentially violent student?" For all the talk, reporting and research that takes place regarding school violence this question still seems to linger. The purpose of this presentation is to address this central question. I will present to participants the stages of hardening toward the system that students go though as they progress toward violence. We will review what staff, faculty, and administrators can do to intervene at each stage along the way.

PDS2Title: If You Can Laugh At It, You Can Live With It!
Presenter: Brad Wilcox, Associate Professor, Department of Teacher Education at Brigham Young University
Description: We all deal with a mountain of problems in our work, families, and society. It can become overwhelming. Keeping a good sense of humor allows us to keep those problems in perspective, build positive relationships with others, and deal with stressful situations that we don’t think we can deal with. Studies show humor is actually good for our physical health, but it is also good for us emotionally and socially. So, go ahead and laugh. Then step back, take a deep breath, and laugh again. That’s the purpose of this presentation. The presenter will also give a few sure-fire ways to develop and improve your sense of humor that works every time.

PDS3Title: Cultural Etiquette-Closing the Gap Between What We Say and What Others Think We Mean
Presenter: Susan Balcom Walton, Associate Professor of Communications and Associate Chair for Student Media at Brigham Young University
Description: Often we think of etiquette as simply using the right fork at a business lunch or sending a thank-you note to a job interviewer, but cultural etiquette goes beyond good manners. It means understanding our workplace culture, comprehending how our actions will be perceived by our colleagues, and taking those perceptions into account before we act. Cultural etiquette is harder to master than basic etiquette, but it's even more important, in fact, it's essential to professional success.

PDS4Title: Finding Your Presentation Chi
Presenter: Lori Drake, Coordinator of Enrollment Services, Davis Campus at Weber State University
Description: Are your presentation skills limited to bullet points? Whether we are delivering information at a conference or in a class room, a boardroom or auditorium, our goal should be to keep presentations simple and engaging. This session will address the basic steps of creating effective presentations. The most effortless details can make a mundane presentation extraordinary. Expand your horizons and learn the secrets to excellent presentation strategy, structure and style.
